27 Dec Your House is Attracting the Wrong Crowd!
Need an idea for a New Year’s Resolution? Try making your property less attractive to insects. Be sure you store firewood away from the foundation and only store enough inside for two to three days. Storing large amounts of firewood inside can introduce many insects such as spiders and beetles along with carpenter ants and wood-boring insects. Always attend to water leaks right away and replace wood that has been soaked in water. Once wood is wet it becomes more attractive to many wood destroying insects as well as other moisture-seeking bugs. Tree stumps are a delicacy to both carpenter ants and termites. As the stump rots, more and more insects make that stump their home. It is a good idea to have the stump ground down or removed completely to avoid attracting both structure-damaging and nuisance pests.
After the winter months, check all soffit areas for gaps made by ice dams and be sure to seal them up. Squirrels, bats and birds can use these small gaps to create larger ones and gain entry into your attic space. And finally, de-clutter your home. Old rugs, clothes and stored items can harbor infestations of moths, beetles and silverfish.
