Have you ever opened a box of cereal, flour or rice and found bugs in it? Well, you are not alone. Bugs invade our food thereby contaminating it to the point of having to throw it away. Dried pet foods such as cat & dog food or treats & birdseed are the most common food items that are subject to infestation.  Other items such as flour, rice and pasta are also prime food products to get infested. Beetles and moths are the most popular insects found in household pantries. If infestations are found, all susceptible food products need to be inspected for signs of the insects. Pay particular attention to cracks and corners where bits of food (flour, dust, spices) may have accumulated.

Once the source(s) of the infestation are removed, the pantry shelves need to be thoroughly vacuumed and cleaned. If the infestation has been festering for a long time, insecticides may need to be used. Although these insects are harmless if you eat them, they breed and spread quickly so it is important to go through your food cabinets regularly and toss expired foods and clean up spills.
