3 Signs of a Termite Infestation

It’s not always easy to know if you have termites. They are called the “silent destroyers” for a reason – they have a proven ability to chew through wood almost undetected. These pests cause over 5 billion dollars in damage each year to American homes, and often that damage is not covered by homeowners insurance.

The sooner you identify the termite problem the sooner you can protect your home. That’s why we’ve developed this list of common termite infestation signs based on our decades of termite extermination experience.

Top 3 Signs You Have a Termite Problem

1. Damaged Wood

Wood can appear to almost have water damage, buckling, or looking swollen. Sometimes it appears to have visible mazes within the walls.

2. Mud tubes on your foundation

Termites can create mud tubes to travel from the soil to their food source. You may see these pencil-like tunnels around your home’s foundation.

3. Termite swarms

You can have a termite infestation without ever even seeing a termite. But if you do see them, it’s likely to be a termite swarm. A swarm is how termites establish new colonies. Sometimes, you don’t actually see the swarm but evidence of them, such as discarded wings near windows.

If you see any of these signs in your home, call a professional termite exterminator and ask for an inspection.

Termite Prevention Tips

After your termite problem is dealt with, it’s time to protect your home from future infestations. Here a few helpful tips to keep your home safe:

  • Have your foundation inspected regularly (and your basement or crawl space if the foundation has any signs of mud tubes)
  • Consider how you handle moisture control around your home
  • Store wood away from the house
  • Keep landscaping a safe distance from your home, making sure bushes and trees don’t come into direct contact with your structures
